What each Grand Theft Auto VI trailer actually established
Four trailers, and what each one put on the record — kept separate from the frame-by-frame readings that fill the rest of the internet.

Trailer 1 named the setting, the platforms and a 2025 window. Trailer 2 came with the official story synopsis. The extended look was captured in-game on PS5 and runs just under 27 minutes. The 90-second launch trailer, also captured in-game on PS5, repeats the story synopsis and debuts music by Justice. Everything beyond that is interpretation.
A trailer is two things at once: an official statement, in the text and the facts Rockstar attaches to it, and several minutes of edited footage that everyone reads differently. This guide keeps the first apart from the second.
Trailer 1 — December 4, 2023
- The setting: the state of Leonida and Vice City
- The platforms: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S
- A release window of 2025 — later moved twice
It also carries a footnote that is not in the trailer at all: it went up a day early, after a copy leaked, which is why both December 4 and December 5 turn up in coverage.
Trailer 2 — May 6, 2025
Released four days after the first delay, and published together with the official synopsis: Jason and Lucia, the deck stacked against them, a score gone wrong, and a criminal conspiracy that reaches across Leonida. That synopsis is still the fullest statement of the story Rockstar has made.
An Extended Look — August 27, 2026
- Announced on August 6 for a Netflix premiere, then released on YouTube and the official site the same evening
- Captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, per Rockstar
- Runtime of 26 minutes 49 seconds, per Netflix’s listing
Beyond that, descriptions are press readings. Game Informer describes a long montage of story missions and open-world moments, and reports footage of switching between Jason and Lucia. That is reported, not announced — useful, and labelled accordingly wherever this site uses it.
Launch trailer — October 15, 2026
- Released on the Newswire and Rockstar’s YouTube channel five weeks before the November 19 release
- 1 minute 30 seconds long, and, per Rockstar, captured entirely in-game on PlayStation 5
- Features new music from Justice, who Rockstar names as composers of the game’s original score
- Came with their single “Flower in a Hurricane”, featuring Tame Impala, SZA and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
- Restates the November 19 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S
The story text Rockstar published with it is the Trailer 2 synopsis again, word for word. So the launch trailer adds music and a final reminder of the date, not new official story detail. This section was added on October 16, 2026, from Rockstar’s post and video listing; this site has not broken down its footage.
What footage cannot tell you
- How a system works — only that something like it appears on screen
- How often something happens in play, or whether it is scripted
- Whether a shot survives unchanged to the launch build
- Map size — no distance, area or travel time has been published
Common questions
How long is the extended look?
Netflix lists 26 minutes 49 seconds. Coverage rounds that to 26, 27 or “almost 30” minutes, which is why the figures disagree.

Is the extended look gameplay?
Rockstar says it was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. That describes how it was made, not how much of it you control — it is still an edited piece, not a play session.
