PS5 or PS5 Pro for Grand Theft Auto VI?
Sony’s store marks Grand Theft Auto VI as PS5 Pro Enhanced, and Rockstar North says consoles currently run it at 30 fps. What the Pro adds has not been announced. Here is what is known, what is not, and how to decide.

Both run it. Sony lists the game as “PS5 Pro Enhanced”, but neither Sony nor Rockstar has said what the Pro version improves. Rockstar North has said consoles currently run the game at 30 fps, with a 60 fps option undecided — so nothing published yet is a reason to upgrade.
What is known
- It runs on both. Grand Theft Auto VI is announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the PS5 Pro plays PS5 games. There is one PS5 version, not a separate Pro edition.
- Sony labels it “PS5 Pro Enhanced”. The tag sits next to the PS5 version on Sony’s own Grand Theft Auto VI page. This comes from the platform holder’s storefront, not from Rockstar — which is why this guide is labelled Reported rather than Official.
- The PS5 features Sony lists are not Pro extras. Tempest 3D Audio, near-instant loading from the SSD, and the DualSense’s haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and speaker are listed as PlayStation 5 features. A standard PS5 has all of them.
- Rockstar’s longest footage was captured on a PS5. Rockstar says the extended look was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. It did not say which model; same-night coverage reported a base PS5.
What “PS5 Pro Enhanced” does and does not tell you
On Sony’s PS5 Pro page, an enhanced game can use advanced ray tracing, AI-upscaled 4K output (PSSR) and higher frame rates. The same page is careful about it: these features are “only available on select PS5 games that have been enhanced for PS5 Pro”, and “PS5 Pro enhanced features will vary by game”.
For Grand Theft Auto VI, neither Sony nor Rockstar has said which of those apply, and neither has published a resolution for any console.
What Rockstar has said about frame rate
One statement, and not an announcement. At a studio visit before the extended look in August, Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson told YouTuber Davy Jones that during development “the consoles are running the game at 30 frames per second”, as reported by VGC. Asked about a 60 fps mode, he said that was for the technical team to decide — at launch or later. He gave no details on resolution or ray tracing, and did not single out the PS5 Pro.
How to decide
This is our advice, not anyone’s announcement:
- You already have a PS5. It runs the game, and it is what Rockstar captured the extended look on. Nothing published so far is a reason to upgrade. If the Pro version turns out to matter to you, you can still decide once it has been described or tested.
- You are buying a console for this game. Either PS5 will play it. The Pro costs more, and what that extra buys in Grand Theft Auto VI is undefined until Rockstar or Sony details it — or until independent tests appear after November 19.
- You want the boxed edition. Per Rockstar, the physical edition is a download code in a box, not a disc. Whether your console has a disc drive makes no difference to it.
We will update this guide when Rockstar or Sony says what the PS5 Pro version does. Until then, see which platforms the game is on and what launch day needs.
Common questions
Do I need to buy the game again to get the PS5 Pro version?
No separate PS5 Pro version is for sale. Sony’s page lists one PS5 version, labelled PS5 Pro Enhanced.

Will it run at 60 fps on PS5 Pro?
Not announced. Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson said in August that consoles were running the game at 30 fps during development, and that a 60 fps option was still for the technical team to decide. Sony’s Pro label does not say what the enhancement is.
